Ladies,
M. and I are heading to downtown Philadelphia this weekend to celebrate my birthday and see a show at the Trocadero. We'll be staying nearby (as in, within walking distance of the Troc.) The Monk's Cafe is our usual go to spot when we're in this part of the world and I'm hoping that does make it into our plans, but where else should we go to eat, drink, try to be merry?
And yes, we are totally up for company if anyone wants to join us for some adult beverages on Saturday night.

Oh,I totally wish I could...going to NYC this weekend. ARE YOU SEEING MOGWAI? They are the best. I just saw this listed...last time they were in town they were sold out by the time I tried to get tickets!
Anyway, there is a good Vietnamese place to eat called Vietnam right near the Troc. It serves alcohol, but isn't a bar. I like having a drink and dinner at Caribou Cafe, sort of non-fancy French food, but not exactly a "bar" more of a bistro type place. If it is nice, which it is supposed to be, they open the french doors, and have tables on the street. Fergie's is a good Irish drinking bar on 12th and Sansom (same dude owns Monks). It's been two years since I lived in Philly. One of my favorite places to eat/drink though used to be Mixto, which is Cuban food. It is on Pine between 11th and 12th. If you go have a mojito for me...*sigh*

Ok, it's sort of cheesy, but I like cheesy. I love City Tavern in Philly, where they attempt to take you back to an 18th century tavern experience. Good beer, too.
The Reading Terminal Market on Arch (I believe it's very very close to the Troc) is a great place to walk through any time of the day to get fresh fruit/vegetables, homecooked food, or even just a cup of coffee. It's a nice mix of all of the different ethic groups in Philly conveniently located under one roof.

Monks is one of our favorites too (I work a block away and it's where I always choose for my birthday coworker lunch). I like The Nodding Head (micro brew restaurant), and The Black Sheep (Irish pub). Last Saturday night we went to a wine and tapas restaurant http://www.triacafe.com/. It was really neat! The had a huge selection of wines and beers.

I second all the above recommendations, particularly all of Angie's. Not sure if it fits in with your plans but the other thing I love about Philly is all of the BYOBs, like Audrey Claire or Bistro 7. Have fun.
